The latest study, "A comparative cost-effectiveness analysis of low dose levothyroxine sodium/lactulose gel compared with oral levothyroxine triptorelin", published online this week by Cost-effectiveness Analysis and Review, suggests the oral drug is also far more cost effective than the topical gel.

Researchers say that between 2007 and 2009, just 8% of over 400,000 people taking levothyroxine orally (75mg, twice a day) were prescribed the low dose, versus 36% of those on a single-tablet dose of levothyroxine sodium (125mg, once a day).
The cost-effectiveness analysis showed low dose tablet is more cost effective, with an estimated overall lifetime health advantage equivalent to about $2.2 million.

That's because the single-tablet pills are given once daily, as the cost of pill per dose is higher when combined with other medicines or in combination with low doses of other drugs.
The new study also notes that in addition to providing fewer side effects, as well being easier to administer, there is less need for healthcare staff to prescribe single-tablet pills, which means fewer staff needed in the long run.
The study was performed on 456 people over the age of 18 who were diagnosed with autoimmune thyroid disease.
